Values & Ethics

At the end of the day, I'm a human being.

Not a business.

Working with me I try to do all I can to keep that in mind on both sides of the relationship. I want to be myself and I want you to feel comfortable enough to be yourself too. If we can't do that, then why make both of ourselves miserable?! My favourite clients are the ones who tell me about what their family are achieving, how their hobbies are going outside of work and have productive/thoughtful chats about the world-at-large.

01 - Why I left the world of employment and went solo.

I wanted professional & personal autonomy.

Part of the reason I went freelance is I realised being a cog in the machine wasn't what I wanted in my professional life. Big agencies are great if you want to work on campaigns for large corporations, but at times it got hard giving my knowledge to industries that felt like soulless profit machines with questionable ethics.

I also value my time outside of work and want to get the most out of this short thing we call life. I'd take my freedom over a pay cheque any day.

02 - What "not a business" means in practice...

You talk to me directly

with direct knowledge of your SEO campaign, not an Account Manager or Sales Rep.

I'll tell you when you don't need me

If SEO isn't going to drive what you need or I can't promise results for a budget, I'll tell you where to invest instead (and introduce you to trusted professionals in my network who can deliver).

No contracts designed to be hard to leave

I have a 14 day notice period, same as the default "cooling off" period within UK consumer law. Most agencies expect at least 90 days minimum.

I'll tell you exactly how much of my time your money buys

I scope projects based on how much I am needed within my own processes I have honed over a decade and a half. No hidden or sudden costs.

03 - What I won't work on.

I value my ethics and want us to be on the same page.

This isn't a moral high horse, you are free to live your life as you wish! To save you time writing an email asking me if I can work on your project, here's what I won't touch. If you sit outside this, then it's likely I'll happily help you...

Animal suffering.

I'm a Vegan of close to a decade. For this reason anything involving factory farming, fur, meat/dairy, leather or testing on animals is a no-go.

Gambling & high-cost credit.

Both make money from the people least able to afford it. I have zero interest in helping either find more of them.

Fossil fuels.

Extracting it or taking part in Green-washing. If the campaign only works because I have to lie to myself/others as part of my job, it isn't for me.

Preying on desperation.

Miracle cures, fake qualifications, get-rich-quick schemes, multi-level marketing. Anything that works by exploiting vulnerability can get in the bin.

Hidden SEO Tactics.

I build houses from bricks, not cards. I won't buy links, make doorway pages, spin content, hide text or anything else I'd be embarrassed to explain. Not because Google might catch it but because it rarely works long term.

Dressing up results.

I won't change context within reports or manipulate data when it comes to performance to keep someone happy - if something isn't going to plan, it will be addressed and rectified.

We’ll never make SEO part of Punk Rock culture, but we can certainly inject some Punk Rock culture into SEO.
