How do you work with clients?
I like to think of myself as a bit different to what you usually encounter in the world of business. Those who spend a long time in the marketing game tend to either get sucked in by the egotistical growth approach or become cynical to it all.
I’m certainly the latter.
You may be reading this and thinking that’s a bad thing. And I understand that – it doesn’t quite fit into the world of corporate appearances to be brutally honest. However, I can tell you right now there are many positives to working with someone like me.
If I had to describe my “personal brand” (which is a cringe term may I add), I’d call myself an Anarchist trying to survive in a Capitalist world and bring around positive change.
The pros of working with me (beyond the fact I’m fairly decent at SEO) include…
- A love for data-informed decisions
- Outside-the-box thought processes to overcome challenges
- Ethical working standards I pride myself on
- Transparent and honest communication
- Distain for the pointless corporate nonsense which serves as little more than a distraction to achieving results
If you are reading this and thinking “This guy doesn’t sound like the right fit for my business” then you are probably correct. But on the flip side, I imagine I’ll probably feel the same about working with you too.
However, if you and/or your business are cool as hell, I’ll go out of my way to win your heart. Money has never been my main drive so long as I make enough to get by comfortably, I pride myself on the results I achieve, the relationships I build and the forward-thinking businesses I can help to fight against corrupt corporate giants like Amazon (if you ever read this Bezos – fuck you).
We’ll never make SEO part of Punk Rock culture, but we can certainly inject some Punk Rock culture into SEO.
What about your previous experience?
I have over 8 years experience in SEO and digital marketing, both agency-side and in-house.
My first job in digital came in 2011, when I landed a Digital Marketing Executive role with OKO Digital; a family-ran online marketing agency based on the South Coast. My previous experience with blogging and social media (mostly via ad-hoc work and being in bands) was enough to get my foot in the door. Over the next two years I cut my teeth in various aspects of digital, including social media, PPC, website monetisation and content creation. It was the SEO however, particularly off-page and link building, that took up most my time and really interested me.
At the end of 2013 I was taken on as an SEO Campaign Delivery Manager with Vertical Leap; one of the largest digital agencies based on the South Coast, where I focused solely on all aspects of SEO. It was my year and a half at Vertical Leap that really honed my knowledge and skill set, not just in SEO, but client communications, time management, strategy planning and everything in between.
In 2015, after a decade of living in Portsmouth, I decided to relocate and move closer to my family in my home county of Suffolk. I started working at Further in July 2015, where I was the lead SEO on one of the business’s largest accounts, overseeing the international SEO of two well-known antivirus software products as well as one of the biggest names in VPN/proxy services.
After just over a year and a half of the painful A140 commute I was tired and exhausted, and made the call to find a job within easier travelling distance. StrategiQ were the agency whom answered by prayers, where I spent another year and a half of my career SEOing.
When 2018 came around, I found myself at yet another relocation cross road; this time to make the jump into the Big Smoke. I let my employer know it was 100% on the cards and went on gut instinct that my professional network was now strong enough to find something within my notice period. In what I believe to be somewhat fate, Stephen Kenwright tweeted an SEO job opening in Edit’s London office 2 days later, and I officially started working there as of the beginning of August.
My time at Edit would be short-lived however, as after 7 months I found myself becoming jaded with agency life. Be it the direct impact you can have on client results, the politics involved in keeping clients on board, a general need for a new challenge or a mix of all of the above, I decided it was time to move on. In April 2019 I landed myself my first in-house role at Netmums, working with a huge website. My biggest achievement whilst there was migrating 1.7m forum pages to a new CMS platform and page design without sacrificing any SEO visibility and traffic (in fact we saw improvements).
In November 2019, after 8 years of slaving away in the digital industry and my maternity cover contract at Netmums ending early, I decided to go out into the world on my own and tackle the scary-but exciting world of freelancing.
And here I am, a journey through the world of SEO that correlates with the loss of my hair.
Do you have any examples of your SEO expertise?
Sadly due to agencies being protective of their work and GDPR laws I can’t publish any of the work I’ve previously done for clients. I can however tell you I’ve been published several respected marketing and SEO platforms over the years, including Moz and SEMrush to name a couple. On top of that, I’ve been spotted in public occasionally giving the odd industry talk or judging the odd industry award.
What kind of clients have you worked with?
I’ve worked on SEO projects for one of the big three UK cinema chains, a Fortune 100 insurance company, a well-known antivirus provider with over 200 million active users globally, one of the UK’s leading eyebrow beauty treatments, an established UK high street book store, a big player in bus airport transfers, a children’s theatre arts school with over 600 locations UK-wide, various eCommerce stores, a historic naval war ship and of course one of the UK’s biggest parenting forums.
What do you like about SEO?
Nothing. I am a shill for capitalism and my life has no purpose.
I’m joking by the way…
If you had to ask me what area of SEO I find most interesting, I’d have to say finding new opportunities or keyword gaps to capitalise on en masse. I ain’t got time for twiddling around with small knobs that won’t move the needle – GO BIG OR GO HOME. I’m also a sucker for creative link building tips.
